Enhancing the value of issuer–investor engagement
A market-led communiqué on investor–issuer engagement in Aotearoa New Zealand, from AIRA and the Aotearoa New Zealand Stewardship Code.
Effective engagement — the conversations that turn disclosure into understanding — supports better capital allocation, sharper accountability and stronger long-term outcomes for the New Zealand market. This communiqué aims to help issuers and investors understand what effective engagement looks like, and how to enhance its value.
It is the product of roundtables hosted by NZX over 2025 and 2026, bringing together senior representatives of New Zealand’s largest listed issuers and institutional investors — CEOs, CFOs, investor relations leads, asset owners and asset managers responsible for a significant share of capital invested here.
What it contains
· A shared commitment between issuers and investors — to communicate clearly and come prepared.
· Four principles for decision-useful information: simplicity, relevance, transparency and proportionality.
· A worked example: capital allocation and strategic logic.
It applies across the engagements that occur through the year — results, strategy, sustainability and governance. It is voluntary and principles-based, imposes no obligations beyond existing law, the NZX Listing Rules and existing codes, and asks for no additional disclosure. It’s intended to support effective practice across New Zealand.
